The Story

New Harmony School of Science Opens in San Antonio

San Antonio, TX — A new chapter in STEM-focused education has begun in San Antonio with the completion of the Harmony School of Science Middle/High School on Wiseman Road. The $33 million, 90,000-square-foot campus is the product of a close collaboration between Skanska Integrated Solutions (SIS), which served as program manager, and Summit Building & Design, which oversaw construction delivery.

The project reflects Harmony Public Schools’ mission of preparing students for college and career readiness through a rigorous, student-centered curriculum with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Designed as a modern, flexible learning environment, the new school features state-of-the-art classrooms, specialized labs, creative spaces, and community amenities that will serve students and families across the San Antonio region for years to come.

Building a School for the Future

The new facility includes multiple classrooms, science and technology labs, administrative offices, and a counselors’ suite, along with spaces designed to foster creativity and collaboration. Students will also benefit from a full-size gymnasium, a cafeteria and kitchen, and a range of outdoor amenities including an athletic field, a basketball court, and a landscaped courtyard. A new parking lot was also constructed to accommodate faculty, staff, and visitors.

Together, these features create a campus environment designed not only to support academic achievement but also to enhance student wellness and community engagement.

“We’re incredibly excited to celebrate with Harmony Public Schools for the completion of the Wiseman Middle and High School building, a state-of-the-art educational facility that will serve students for generations to come,” said Caira Scott, Program Manager with Skanska Integrated Solutions. “Skanska has always been at the forefront of creating vibrant learning environments, and this project is a testament to our firm’s ability to help produce cutting-edge facilities that promote enhanced learning experiences for students.”

A Collaborative Effort

For Harmony Public Schools, the project represented more than a construction effort; it was a chance to expand its footprint in the San Antonio area and deliver on its promise of STEM-focused education in a purpose-built facility.

To achieve this, the organization brought in Skanska Integrated Solutions as program manager. SIS was responsible for overseeing construction quality, managing the project budget, monitoring the schedule, and coordinating between all stakeholders. Their role also included reviewing pay applications, evaluating change orders, and maintaining a rigorous document control system to keep the project on track.

On the ground, however, much of the daily work of building the new school fell to Summit Building & Design, the project’s construction partner. Summit managed day-to-day site operations, coordinated subcontractors, and ensured that each phase of the build—from foundations and framing to systems installation and interior finishes—was executed to the highest standards.

“Summit’s role was central to bringing this project to life,” said Luis De Hoyos, Construction Project Manager at Harmony Public Schools. “With the collaboration of Skanska and Summit Building & Design, we accomplished our mission with the completion of this state-of-the-art middle and high school to serve the San Antonio region. We couldn’t have had a more perfect program manager, and we look forward to future school developments together.”

Overcoming Challenges

Like most large-scale school construction projects, the Harmony School of Science faced its share of challenges. The timeline for delivery was aggressive, requiring careful sequencing of construction tasks to ensure the school would be ready for students. Budget discipline was equally important, with a mandate to deliver the $33 million project without cost overruns.

Summit Building & Design tackled the construction schedule with a streamlined approach to subcontractor management and daily operations. Skanska, meanwhile, kept close watch over the schedule and budget, ensuring milestones were met and financial resources remained aligned with project goals.

Specialized spaces like the school’s science and technology labs also demanded close coordination between contractors, designers, and program managers. Harmony’s focus on STEM meant these labs required advanced systems and infrastructure. Summit worked closely with designers and consultants to ensure these needs were met, while Skanska maintained oversight to safeguard quality and compliance.

A Community Investment

Beyond the classrooms and labs, the new Harmony School of Science San Antonio represents a major investment in the community. The gymnasium and athletic field provide new opportunities for student athletics, while creative spaces and the landscaped courtyard encourage collaboration and social engagement. The school was designed not only as a place of learning but as a hub for student growth and family involvement.

For Harmony Public Schools, the project underscores its long-standing mission. “Harmony prepares every student for college and career by providing a safe, caring, and collaborative atmosphere and a quality student-centered educational program with a strong emphasis on STEM,” De Hoyos explained.

The completion of the campus also positions Harmony to expand its reach in San Antonio, offering additional capacity to serve a growing student population.

Looking Ahead

For both Skanska Integrated Solutions and Summit Building & Design, the project stands as an example of what can be achieved through strong collaboration between program management and construction leadership. By combining Skanska’s expertise in oversight and quality assurance with Summit’s hands-on construction delivery, the team successfully realized Harmony’s vision for a 21st-century learning environment.

The school now serves as a model for how educational facilities can be designed and built to meet the evolving needs of students while strengthening ties to the surrounding community.

Conclusion

The opening of the new Harmony School of Science Middle/High School on Wiseman Road marks a milestone for San Antonio education. With its state-of-the-art labs, modern classrooms, athletic facilities, and creative spaces, the school reflects Harmony Public Schools’ commitment to academic excellence and student development.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Skanska Integrated Solutions and Summit Building & Design, the $33 million project was delivered on time and on budget, providing a lasting resource for students, families, and the San Antonio community.
